The Quartz Hill County Library has been open since July 24, 1959. This small library has appealed to everyone, from kids to adults, for the past 57 years. After many years of use, the facility began to wear down. Due to this fact, the county has decided to open a new and improved library.

This new library will be located just up the street from the old one at 5040 West Avenue M-2 in Quartz Hill. The grand opening will be held on November 19th. Vanessa Christman, the Regional Administrator at County of Los Angeles Public Library, explained that the landscape and parking lot will be enhanced, as the new facility will be approximately three times the size of the current one. Christman described the landscaping as “lovely” and the parking lot as “much larger.” She also notes that there will be “lots of windows to let natural light in and even outdoor patios!”

“The library will also feature a state-of-the-art community meeting room with Wi-Fi and audiovisual equipment,” states Vanessa Christman. This room will be available for local organizations and clubs to rent. The separate childrens’ space will be complete with computers and quiet reading rooms.

Even high school students can benefit from the facilities at the library. The teen space will include comfortable furniture, computers, and a wide variety of books. Two private rooms will be equipped with whiteboard walls and projectors, and students will be able to reserve these rooms to work on or practice a group project. Christman explains, “In some cases there are fees associated with renting the room, but we are more than happy to work with school groups to make it an accessible option.” Once opened, the library is going to work on improving and expanding their programs and services.

Dyamond Turner, a student at Quartz Hill High School, says that she appreciates the wide variety of books. Since the Quartz Hill Library is a county library, patrons can request a book, and it will be sent from a different county library location. This system makes it convenient for people to check out specific books.

Imoni Speed, a Quartz Hill High School freshman, said, “When I was younger, they used to hold little events such as movie nights for the kids and parents that walked there after school.” Speed enjoys the fact that the library is family-friendly and brings the community together.

Ashleigh Smith attends Quartz Hill High School. She explained that her mom is a teacher at an elementary school and sometimes asks Smith to read with her students. She says, “I would like to see reading sessions for the kids who need to improve their reading.” The new library will certainly provide an opportunity for young children to come and read in a comfortable space; this feature is an improvement over the previous outdated and cramped location.

Overall, this change is going to make a big difference in the community. This new facility will provide a place to meet, learn, and study. A new library is long overdue in the Quartz Hill area.
