Every October, I love binging the kooky Halloween films like Halloweentown or Haunted Mansion, but what I love to watch the most are horror films. This Halloween was no exception. As I write this, I have watched over 20 horror films, some of which are fun and spooky, while others are boring. For this reason, I am sharing three of what I believe to be the best horror films I’ve seen this October. Now, these aren’t the best films of all time or all new movies, but they were a fun watch with friends that gave us a good scare.
The first film I’d like to discuss is the 2022 movie Smile. I hadn’t seen this film until October because I was worried it was being overhyped for what it was. People dying from smiling, really? After watching it, though, I realized that it is way more than that. The film follows the main protagonist, Rose, who is a psychotherapist, as she discovers a smiling evil. She encounters a demon dressed in human clothes, twisting with her mind. With several high-budget jump scares that left me genuinely startled, as well as phenomenal acting by Sosie Bacon and an intriguing story, it was definitely one of the best movies I watched this year, overall.
On the complete other side of the spectrum, I also watched one of the silliest horror movies, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. As the title suggests, the movie is about clowns from space wreaking havoc on a small town. It is a super cheesy movie released in 1988 with very few scary scenes, but if you are someone who doesn’t like getting jumpscared every few minutes but enjoys a goofy and gory fun film, then this movie is just right for you. While not completely family-friendly, it is definitely fun to watch with friends if you just want to laugh and get into the Halloween mood.
Finally, for all those who love the classics, Halloween was definitely one of my top three Halloween watches. Almost everyone knows this movie, featuring Michael Myers and his iconic white latex mask, as he stalks his victims on Halloween night. It’s such a classic slasher film that has become such a cozy Halloween watch as the movie has aged over the years and become less and less scary. The film’s atmosphere, along with its iconic music, compensates for its lack of scares, making it a timeless classic that remains relevant through the decades.
These three films, although not all terrifying, have been great fun to watch with friends and family, allowing us to enjoy another Halloween season.
