Girls’ Volleyball Scrimmage VS Canyon High

In one of the first home games of the season, the Rebels’ girls’ volleyball team managed to defend their title with a win over Canyon High School. This scrimmage, which took place at home in the Big Gym on September 1, 2016 was an exciting win for the varsity team, which bested Canyon High School in three out of five matches.

Many members viewed the game as fairly easy, with our girls’ volleyball team easily destroying Canyon during the first two games of the match. Although they won, the Rebels’ volleyball team acknowledged that their competitor had a solid team that consisted of many good passers. Our girls’ team also stated that although Canyon’s team was good, the Rebels ultimately won due to the digs they were able to deflect off of the hitters.

Jordyn Baccus, middle hitter, identified unity as one of the prime reasons why “[our girls’ volleyball] did not normally score as many points as they did in previous matches, showcasing the fact that Canyon High has a fairly good girls’ volleyball team and that [our team] should not view our victory as easily won.”

Although the first two games were easily won, the third set was a bit more of a challenge in the eyes of middle hitter, Jordyn Baccus. This was due to the lack of hits as compared to the first two sets and the absence of Coach David Gutierrez’s rotation of the starting players, some of the strongest players on the team. Due to this challenge in the third set, our girls were edged out by two points, winning the match 26-24. With the loss of the third set, Quartz Hill managed to rebound by winning the fourth set, winning the game and besting Canyon three out of five games.

Based on the performance of this match, players Jordyn Baccus (middle hitter) and Megan Taflinger (outside hitter) believe that the team as a whole needs to improve in order to avoid another mishap. They wish for their serves and blocking to improve, ensuring further wins for the 2016-2017 varsity girl’s volleyball season.
