Whenever Apple releases a new software update, there is always controversy about the new features and whether the update is worth downloading. Nevertheless, many people still download the new update despite the so-called “warnings” that reviewers post online.

   In June, the company unveiled the iOS 10 operating system for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and it became available to the public on September 13, 2016. This update revamped many of the applications for the company’s products.

   Some of the applications that are now “more personal, more powerful, and more playful,” according to Apple, include the Messages app, Apple Maps, Photos, and Siri. Apple has also developed widgets, a feature that is found in Android products, in its new software.

   Aleksandra Brajanovska, a sophomore at Quartz Hill, said, “ iOS 10 is a cool update and I really like the Messages app now because I can send texts with different effects. Also, I like that I can play games with my friends over text message.”

   Messages is one of the applications that grabbed the most attention due to the large number of added effects and features. In fact, people can now change the way the message bubbles look when and if they want to say it loud, whisper it, or yell with a slam. People with the new update can also send messages with invisible ink so the recipients can only view the text if they slide their finger over it.

   Additionally, the iOS 10 allows users to handwrite their messages, draw sketches, and even send their own heartbeat. Extension applications also permit users to send special stickers and play games including pool, anagrams, and battleship with others.

   The other new features include an updated Siri, the company’s attempt at voice control for the devices. However, the company has struggled to improve the accuracy of Siri, so it is up to reviewers to test this new and improved feature.

   Nonetheless, these new features may not be worth downloading the update for some people. Mariah Hernandez, another student from Quartz Hill said, “ Ever since I downloaded iOS 10 it has slowed my phone down so much. Everything takes so long too load. I really should not have gotten it.”

   Hernandez is not alone. Many people around the world have posted reviews online about iOS 10 saying that it had tremendous negative effects on the speed of their devices.

   Despite the negative reviews, iOS 10 provides a great change for many people, including students from Quartz Hill.
