The “Down-Low” On Quartz Hill’s Hip Hop Team
Our high school is known for having an abundance of various clubs and activities, but some in particular stand out, like the hip hop dance team. The hip hop team has become increasingly popular over the years, performing their sick moves at more and more assemblies. They tend to stay busy these days, especially with major school events.
Kaleia Ashley, a member of the team, says they are currently getting ready to perform at the upcoming and highly anticipated Homecoming assembly. They intend to give it their all and are working hard to make sure they keep the crowd cheering, which will no doubt be the case as most students enjoy their performances.
Those stellar productions take time to perfect, however. Normally the team meets up twice a week for two hours each day, but when there is a big show coming up, things get a bit more busy. The schedule increases to three to four days a week with each session ranging from two to three hours long. This time is spent rehearsing and perfecting every move.
Time management can be especially stressful during hectic periods. Kaleia Ashley tries to use her time wisely by finishing as much work in class as she can so she can give practice her full attention. Although it is stressful, she does not seem to mind, saying “Eat, sleep, school, dance, repeat is most of our lives, and we love it!”
The team’s three captains, Taylor, Kaitlin, and Malyca, try to choose the best songs to build a choreography to. The songs tend to be upbeat with good rhythm, something that can get both the dancers and the audience excited while watching the performance. After the song is chosen, the captains then start building their choreography around it.
While the team is already incredibly talented, they are still striving to be better. “Personally,” Ashley states, “my goals are to be a better dancer, become more confident in front of a crowd, and just have fun.” As for goals, she says “We want to look amazing and push hard, but still have some play time where we just chill and get to know each other better.” This is an important balance to maintain in order to keep things running smoothly within the team. This year, the hip hop team is sure to bring numerous incredible performances that students are bound to enjoy due to the dancers’ passion.
