Quartz Hill’s Rebels swim team has kicked off its season with a great start. The team recently competed in the Golden League Pentathlon swim meet, at the Eastside Pool on Saturday, March 4th.

The swimmers challenged two other schools in the Valley, including Lancaster High School and Pete Knight High School. Each swimmer was required to swim five events, one of which included the Individual Medley, which is a single event that includes all four strokes: backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly, and the freestyle.

Quartz Hill High School quickly racked up points, as the highest ranked swimmers were mostly Rebels. Many swimmers had different views on their performance.

Peyton Binford, a varsity swimmer, stated, “I felt really great about my performance to be completely honest. I dropped time in four out of the five events I swam. My best event or my favorite to swim is the 100 breaststroke because it is not all about how fast you can go; it is all about timing and technique. My worst event is the 200 I.M. because of how long of a race it is as well as the amount of endurance it takes to complete it.”

Even though Peyton was proud of his performance, he also noted the things he needed to work on, such as his kicking. He uses most of his upper body strength to propel himself through the water, but utilizing his legs properly could make him a much better swimmer.

Binford said, “This meet was a lot of fun to swim, and I enjoyed being there and being able to see my friends. However, as much as I love the meet and swimming competitively, I do think that having to do all five events back to back is fairly difficult for almost all people, especially for some of the newer swimmers.”

He explained that although the swimming is rigorous, everyone had fun and really enjoyed spending time with their teammates.

He stated, “I believe I met my goals in this meet – my times were great, and I would happily do it again every weekend if I had the chance!”

Another swimmer, a freshman, Alistaire Martin, felt differently about how he did at Golden League.

Martin stated, “I felt like I did terrible. My best event was the 100 Fly, and my worst was the 100 Free. I think I could really improve on my freestyle.”

Alistaire did not feel as great about the Golden League meet, as he did not meet his goals. In terms of team performance, though, the freshman did concede that the Rebels did perform well.

Once again, the Rebels have swept away their competition with their prestigious swim team. The swimmers are looking forward to a great season with many victories.
