Cinco de Mayo Assembly Preview
Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla, and the Spanish Club is organizing an assembly to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Although this celebration takes place on May 5th, the Spanish Club will have the assembly on April 21st during 3rd period.
The Spanish Club wants to entertain the school and expose students to the Latin American culture through music and dance. Señora Reyes, one of the club’s advisors, noted, “We want to promote diversity and display the different types of dances that have been influenced by other cultures.” The goal of the assembly is to show that there are many aspects that make up the Latin American culture.
Those participating in the assembly have been practicing for the celebration since February. They practiced every day for about an hour and a half after school. Performers even came to school during Spring Break to work on perfecting their dance. The choreographers have been spending countless hours creating dances that replicate the traditional dances.
The different regions of South America will be displayed through various dances. Itzeli Garcia, the President of Spanish Club, explained, “Students will see different dances that they have never seen or are not used to seeing.” The gym will be full of bright, colorful outfits and upbeat music.
Emily Esparza, a Spanish Club member, will be participating in the assembly. She revealed, “I am performing a traditional Mexican dance known as Baile Folklórico, which is a very well choreographed dance with a lot of skirt movement.” Baile Folklórico emphasizes local folk culture with ballet elements. She is excited to see other performances tie together and depict the culture.
Señora Reyes is amazed with how much the Spanish Club has grown over the years. She remembers the club when it had few members and now it has around 150 active members. Itzeli Garcia revealed, “This is going to be the best Cinco de Mayo assembly that the Spanish Club has ever put on.” She is sure of this due to all the hard work that everyone has put into each performance.
The Cinco de Mayo Assembly will be exciting this year. The Spanish Club has been putting a lot of work into the assembly. Students will learn about the Latin American culture through the multiple traditional dances.
