As the end of the school year approaches, ASB holds their elections for ASB and class officer positions to figure out who will be running the school for the upcoming year. This gives many students the chance to hold a position in their individual year’s class or for the Associated Student Body. After the votes were counted, Carlos Salazar was elected the position of Secretary for ASB, and he will be helping with the management of big school events such as Prom.

Salazar achieved success in this election mainly through intense campaigning. It all started with talking to his friends, who then told their friends; soon, a chain started to form encompassing all the students in the school. Along with this, he put up flyers, handed out pencils and necklaces, and made signs for his friends to wear around school. He mainly received the help of fellow sophomores, but there were still a good amount of freshmen and juniors who were willing to help out.

Salazar has been in ASB for three years. Coming into his first year of high school, he was very quiet and timid, but this did not stop him from letting his voice be heard. Later that year, he won secretary for his class. His job was to record the conversations at the meetings in order to remember all of the deadlines and to turn in fundraiser requests.

Due to the position in his first year in high school, Salazar became more social, and he started to be recognized by his fellow classmates and eventually even strangers. This was a very important transition and played a very important role for him to secure the title of secretary yet again this school year.

He believes that he deserves this position, saying, “In high school, I have managed to keep a 4.0 GPA since the beginning of freshman year. I also am in many clubs, and I recently performed in the Multicultural Assembly.” Carlos plans to become more involved in school clubs next year, believing this will help to gather other people’s opinions on how the school needs to be improved.
