On Friday, January 26, Quartz Hill High School conducted its annual Winter Assembly in the large gym. The Blacklight Assembly took place during third period, following the 3ABC assembly schedule.

With the help of the Winter Assembly Short-Term committee, ASB began planning for this assembly around the end of November. Samantha Cheng, Lauren Rickert, and Kitari Taton were the Assembly Commissioners and the members on their committee included Nicole Ross, Mya Adopholus, Jennifer Peñaloza, Kennedy Porter, Shivani Kangakar, Carolhina Rosario, and Isaac Seiple.

Assembly Commissioner Samantha Cheng explained how she obtained her position: “I got the position by expressing interest in the job and pursuing that interest last year. Once I realized that I wanted to be an Assembly Commissioner, I involved myself more with assemblies and constantly talked to the assembly commissioners to figure out their responsibilities.”

One of the first steps in planning for the assembly was choosing a theme. Members of ASB voted on the Blacklight theme of the Assembly. Prior to the voting process, various theme ideas were written and shared on the board. Additionally, ASB chose the MC’s for the assembly, Jamila Nasser and Brandon Moreno.

In preparation for the assembly, ASB planned the decorations and contacted the singer and performers about a mo

nth in advance. For this assembly, Melody Paige was chosen to be the singer of the national anthem. As for the performances, some of the teams involved were Guitar Club, Color Guard, Hip-Hop, Dance, Spanish Club, and Cheer.

Sona Keshishyan, a student who attended two out of the three assemblies, expressed her thoughts: “I originally attended the second assembly. However, since that was cut short, I decided to stay for the third assembly. Quite honestly, I believe the Winter Assembly went really well considering the unfortunate event that took place. I enjoyed all the performances and danced along to many of the songs.”

Unfortunately, due to a serious injury faced by one of the participants, the second assembly had to be modified to exclude the games involving the sports teams.

Assembly Commissioner Samantha Cheng shared her aspirations for the Winter Assembly: “My main goals for the assembly were for the decorations to glow, the performers to stand out, and for the whole process to go smoothly. Overall, the assembly went well though there were setbacks. Everyone involved in the assembly did an amazing job adjusting and I am proud of how it turned out in the en

d.”

Overall, the Winter Assembly was a successful event for students to enjoy due to the hard work put in by ASB and the school teams.
