Back to School Fashion

By Josephine Nadolny, Staff Writer

As the school year begins, many thoughts go through students’ minds, mostly involving how they are going to tackle the year in the most efficient way possible.  These resolutions for the new school year usually end within the first week, just like the motivation we have for most things involving school, including what we wear.

Most students, especially females, have now realized that Quartz Hill High School has suddenly decided to enforce a dress code this 2018-2019 school year. This has added more pressure on girls when deciding what to wear every morning.  The possibility of being stopped at lunch, or even being pulled out of class because of what you are wearing is humiliating for everyone. Since there is not much students can do about the dress code, they must find ways to work around it while still feeling distinctive and confident.

The first thing everyone must know when shopping for clothes, whether it be at your local mall or your mom’s closet, is that any piece, regardless of the price or brand, can be made into a great outfit.  The second most important rule of dressing is that gender labels are completely irrelevant when it comes to clothing. Women in men’s clothing, and vice versa, make for some of the most iconic looks in fashion throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and present day.

Now, when it comes to school, students want to be comfortable, but still make a statement with what they are wearing.  Here are some tips that I use in my everyday life when dressing for school:

  1. T-shirts underneath tank tops

Although this trend started in the 90’s, the tank over tee epidemic has never ended.  In my opinion, this look is best worn with slip dresses or flowy lace and satin tank tops over a plain white baby tee. This can be paired with anything from an old pair of jeans to a skirt and sneakers. Not only is this great for summer, but it also won’t get you pulled out of class for the ever so dreaded shoulder.

  1. Oversized clothing

Going back to the genderless world of fashion, women in men’s pants, jackets, and t-shirts will always look great. Personally, I always feel the most confident and comfortable in baggy jeans and a t-shirt. However, this look is not for everyone, but it is very versatile. Oversized t-shirts worn as dresses, or baby tees with loose-fitting jeans, paired with a funky pair of platforms or sneakers make for the best outfits.

  1. Accessories

Accessorizing is the perfect way to make a basic outfit special.  Adding necklaces, earrings, and rings can help make statements on their own when it’s done correctly.  Chain necklaces, along with more dainty pieces, and earrings pair well together and are pleasing to the eye.

  1. Fun hair and makeup

The last thing to make your day and appearance more interesting are different makeup and hairstyles.  Every day I try to incorporate easy, yet striking makeup looks into my outfit. Hair is also a big part of someone’s individuality.  If you are feeling bored with yourself and appearance, try changing your hair, whether it be the style or color.
