For the past four years, Former President Donald Trump refuted the science behind climate change, rolling back a significant number of environmental protections. As the nation shifts into a new president’s hands, the age of climate change denial is over. On January 27, President Joe Biden announced several new plans of action to combat climate change.

Not even a month after his inauguration, Biden announced that the U.S. would rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement, stop building the Keystone XL pipeline, halt new fossil fuel and gas leasings, and prioritize the fight against climate change— a sharp one-eighty from Trump’s policies. “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive,” tweeted the former president.

In an effort to dispute the traditional Republican idea of the threat of environmentalism on the economy, particularly on the middle- lower-class, Biden has emphasized the jobs that his new plans should bring.

“Today is climate day in the White House, which means today is jobs day at the White House,” Biden proclaimed.

According to Biden’s executive order, millions of “green jobs” would be created from the various projects his plan entails, like the construction of energy-efficient homes and electric-vehicle charging stations. Nevertheless, skeptics still ponder Biden’s agenda.

“I’m all for transitioning to cleaner forms of energy, but we have to deal with the reality of, for example, the fact that there are 280 million cars with internal combustion engines on our roads,” Republican Senator John Cornyn stated. “How are families going to get to work, take their kids to school, or live their life if all of a sudden the very natural resource that they depend on for their cars is no longer available?”

Republican lawmakers, state officials, and fossil fuel lobbyists are already taking steps to resist the new orders. Right-wing attorneys warn the president not to abuse his power, and the petroleum industry is relaunching ads promoting drilling on federal land. Still, the Biden administration has made it clear that they are not in the business of compromise anymore.

“People have been in pain long enough,” shared Domestic Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy. “We are not going to ask for sacrifice. If we fail to win the heart of middle America, we will lose.”

The Trump administration completed nearly 100 rollbacks on environmentalist policies. Experts in environmental law stated that the process of restoring ecological protections will not be overnight and will probably be ongoing for the entirety of Biden’s term.

“We really don’t have a minute to waste,” said John Kerry, the new White House climate envoy.
