Effective school administration plays a crucial role in shaping students and ensuring that they will thrive and succeed. However, do they treat students fairly and respectfully? Three students attending Quartz Hill High School were interviewed and asked similar questions: 1. Have you had interactions or encounters with an administrator? 2. If so, what was it for, and how did they respond or react to your needs? 3. Is there anything they need to work on? And lastly, 4. Do you believe they treat students fairly?
The first student I spoke with was Avery Jennings, a freshman, “Throughout my time at school, I have had the opportunity to interact with several members of the administration. I spoke to one person at admin in search of either an object or person, and I additionally asked a teacher. A man who worked there nicely stepped in and helped me out. I have had other times where they were somewhat rude when I tried to ask a lady at the front desk a simple question in the nicest way possible, but I was given such a rude response. The only thing they need to work on is treating students better, just because some students are rude and disrespectful doesn’t mean that the rest of us should be receiving their attitude. Admin has their moments, and it does depend on who you talk to, so I believe it’s 50/50.”
Haley Hartmann, a sophomore, had this to say about the school’s administration and counselors. “I have had a few interactions with the administration. I have had to talk to the principal and Vice principal to help plan events for our school. These were all positive interactions where I and other students were offered help. On the other hand, my interactions with counselors have been bad. Most of the time, the counselors don’t even email me back. I went and cried in my counselor’s office one time, and all my counselor said was to “push through it.” The administration needs to work harder to understand what students are going through and not just deal with us because they are paid to do so. I believe that the counselors do not treat students fairly, but our school heads are fair to students. “
For the last student, she will remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of how she expressed her feelings about the administration. Her words were: “I believe the administration at our school is mediocre. When you talk to them, they try to figure out the problems you have or try not to discriminate against you, but sometimes it does feel a bit backlashed. I just think there are some things they need to work on, like the attitude they give when you ask them something simple, like a slip. But other than that, they’re good.”
These students all had different experiences with our school’s administrators, but it all leads back to their attitude and how they can sometimes treat students. Other than that, the administration has its days. They are also human, but do you think they treat students fairly?
