In recent years, Meta (previously known as Oculus) has been at the forefront of VR technology, being one of the world’s biggest companies revolving around VR. As of 2024, the Meta Quest 2 was the most-sold VR headset in the world, having over 20 million units sold. However, announced in June 2023, Meta’s newest headset was announced, the Meta Quest 3.
The Meta Quest 3 has some of the most advanced VR technology to date, having the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Processor, which allows for both VR and AR (Augmented Reality) experiences. The Quest 3 also has the capability for full-color MR (Mixed Reality), which compared to its predecessor, the Quest 2, could only produce a black and white MR experience. The Quest 3 also has a higher per-eye resolution, having 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye compared to the Quest 2’s 1832 x 1920 pixels. Overall, technologically, the Quest 3 is way ahead of its predecessor, which for only a 4 year gap between releases, is great.
The Quest 3 is also a very comfortable headset, having an upgraded stock headstrap from the Quest 2. The new stock head strap for the Quest 3 has a better support system, which also helps the weight distribution. Compared to the Quest 2, the Quest 3 weighs 515g, whereas the Quest 2 only weighs 503g. However, many Quest 3 users claim that the Quest 3 feels lighter than the Quest 2. This is due to the weight distribution that the Quest 3 utilizes, and the new pancake lens design the Quest 3 uses. Another factor of the weight distribution is the fact that the headset itself is thinner than the Quest 2.
The new Touch Plus controllers the Quest 3 has are an upgrade from the previous controllers. Instead of having tracking rings, the new Touch Plus controllers have inside-out tracking, a form of tracking that makes the previous tracking rings no longer useful. Other than the controllers, you can also use hand-tracking, which has been significantly improved from that of the previous headset.
Overall, so many innovations and improvements have been made to the Quest 3 which makes it such a leap in VR headsets.
