The Black Student Union, commonly known as BSU, is a club targeted towards the black community on campus; however, everyone is welcome. It is a student-run organization that supports black students, exploring culture, history, and contributions. BSU gives a wide range of opportunities to people. Going from field trips to even possible future scholarships. Meetings are held every Thursday in room 344. BSU strongly focuses on and encourages building a community of people by offering support, education, and a fun time overall.
What is the impact of BSU on you?
BSU has a significant impact on the number of students on campus. Not only does it bring together black students, but it also brings together a community. Jordyn Hamberlin, BSU’s co-president, says, “…Even though we may look the same or we may have had the same experiences, that doesn’t mean that our beliefs, morals, and basically, anything else is the same.” Within BSU, so many people share similar experiences, but all experienced them differently, allowing a strong community for new bonds and friendships. Being in a community like BSU brings a lot of learning experiences, as co-president Relia Alexander said, “Having a place to learn and grow as a family.” BSU’s main component is bringing attention to the black community and education, and pursuing everyone in the club and at the school to grow and become more informed.
What does BSU bring to campus?
The Black Student Union brings many things to Quartz Hill’s campus. But the largest thing is awareness. Vice President Madison Collins says, “BSU brings to the campus recognition for black students and culture. It’s not just for black students. Anyone can get educated on black history, culture, etc.” BSU, being an open club for anyone and everyone, helps the campus’ lively students be more informed about demographics they may not know about. Similarly said by co-president, Relia, BSU brings diversity and a place where people can come together and learn about history and culture. An outsider, Emma Smith, says, “BSU brings unity and a sense of community.” Even with the students not involved in the group, the hard work from BSU is still represented, bringing recognition to the black student demographic.
Why join BSU?
Co-president Relia Alexander believes, “People should join BSU because it gives you access to certain things like field trips to HBCU, scholarships, and poetry slams. For me personally, it provided so much knowledge and experience.” Relia is a prime example of why BSU should be your next club of choice. The amount of overall experiences you get to have and learn about many different points of history opens your eyes to a new horizon. BSU also provides a wide range of connections. It’s a huge way to not only learn more, but also about yourself.
And that’s a wrap on a short, deep dive into the Black Student Union. BSU is among the few clubs that bring such broad light to the campus. It not only helps the individuals of the club but also the community on campus.
