All across the United States, streets were filled with chants, homemade signs, and a wave of energy as people came together to make their voices heard. What started as a call for fairness and democracy quickly grew into one of the biggest organized protests in recent years, the “No Kings” movement.
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, people across the United States joined together in massive rallies known as the “No Kings” protests. The events were meant to show opposition to what organizers described as growing authoritarian behavior under Donald Trump. According to groups that helped plan the protests, there were more than 2,600 demonstrations in all 50 states, with an estimated turnout of millions.
The date was chosen for a reason. It was both President Trump’s 79th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. Organizers said the timing sent a message: “In America, we don’t have kings.” Protests took place in major cities like New York and Denver, but also in smaller towns and suburbs. In Denver alone, about 3,000 people attended, with national estimates reaching close to seven million.
Most of the protests were peaceful, but there were a few problems. In Southern California, a car hit several protesters in a hit-and-run incident, leading to arrests. In some areas, police declared the gatherings unlawful after a few confrontations or when people entered restricted spaces.
Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, criticized the protests, calling them “un-American” and claiming they were tied to extremist groups. Organizers and Democratic officials denied those claims, saying the movement was focused on democracy and civic engagement.
Groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and Indivisible helped organize the events. One protest leader summed it up by saying, “We intend to defend our democracy.”
In the end, the “No Kings” protests showed how strongly many Americans feel about limiting executive power and protecting civil liberties. Whether this movement will create lasting political change isn’t clear yet but it definitely made an impact.
