Is it concerning how people are rushing into Starbucks to buy this new bear cup they have, or is it really not that deep?
People have been going crazy ever since Starbucks came out with this new bear cup for the holidays. Most people think that the cup is very basic and just an ordinary cup, but others find it very cute. There is nothing wrong with wanting this cup, but the problem started when people, mostly grown adults, started fighting and obsessing over it. Many people, including me, think that people fighting over this cup are crazy. People wait till 3 in the morning to drive to Starbucks in hopes of getting a bear cup, driving to 3 or more Starbucks for a chance of getting a $30 cup. People on the internet have started bullying people who have made it their mission to get this cup. People have also said that it’s embarrassing for grown adults to act like this over a cup. We have seen this before: people acting like this over Stanley and labubus. I believe people act like this in America because they can have something to look forward to, a dopamine rush. For example, the bear cup from Starbucks and labulu look ordinary, something you might pass up in a store buy, but because everyone wants it, people have been influenced to buy it. I can admit that when I first saw the bear cup, I thought it was a normal, cute cup, but as I saw more and more, I started to want one. I believe this is also called “The lipstick effect,” a term used in economics. This basically is when, during a recession or economic slowdown, people will stop buying expensive items. Instead, people will buy small luxury items like the Starbucks bear cup. Think of this like an emotional purchase, small, inexpensive items that feel special without feeling like people are making mad financial decisions.
