Lifelong Lessons Learned from Girl Scouts

With the recent controversy surrounding Girl Scout Cookies, many consumers are doubting whether or not they should purchase Girl Scout Cookies, as most of the profits of the cookies are being sent to corporations. However, there are many benefits for the Girl Scouts to sell cookies since they learn lifelong skills by selling them.

Michelle Victor, one of the Girl Scouts, claimed that “cookie selling season was the best season during her experience within the organization.” In addition to that, selling Girl Scout Cookies taught her the importance of setting and reaching a goal. Michelle was always motivated to sell more cookies than she sold in the previous season. Since the profits earned from selling Girl Scout cookies contribute to trips and other events for the Girl Scouts, it was important for her to make enough money in order to achieve the minimum amount of earnings. Michelle revealed that, without this exposure, she would not have learned the important skill of goal setting at such a young age. The premise of selling cookies itself also has valuable skills that Girl Scouts can learn.

The majority of the Girl Scouts attempt to sell their cookies outside of grocery or appliance stores, and every time a person comes by the area, the Girl Scouts always ask if the person wants to buy a box of cookies. However, some people do not want to buy cookies, so many of the Girl Scouts learn to face rejection. Rejection is a common theme in everyday life and to experience this at a young age is a humbling experience. Michelle said that “as I became older, I learned to appreciate every ‘yes’ I received.” With the newfound stigma of the basis of selling Girl Scout cookies, there are many people doubting the benefits of the Girl Scout cookies, but we must think about this practice in a positive manner.

Selling Girl Scout cookies teaches a plethora of lifelong skills, and for the majority of the time, this practice heavily benefits the activities in which the Girl Scouts participate in. Selling Girl Scout cookies is the most valuable exercise that Girl Scouts do, even if some people consider the cookies “overpriced.” The main goal of selling cookies is to stimulate similar situations a Girl Scout might experience later in life. With this mind, I do not see a problem with Girl Scout cookies, as they taste great and selling these cookies teaches young girls life long skills and values.
