Boys Varsity Tennis Review

With the Golden League season starting for the Quartz Hill Rebels boys tennis team, there is much to look forward to this year. Since the team has few seniors, the sophomore and junior classes rule the team. A very valuable player is sophomore Isaac Kim. With a personal record of 12 wins and 1 loss, Kim is leading the Rebels to victory every day. Other very notable players are Westin Allen and Michael Ruddy, who constitute the number one varsity doubles team.

The journey of the boys’ varsity tennis team began with the season opener against Serrano High School. Isaac Kim destroyed his opponents and won all three of his sets. Also, Westin Allen and Michael Ruddy triumphed over the other team thanks to their use of team-work and skills. With the final scores of 13-5, Quartz Hill dominated Serrano to begin their 2016-2017 season.

The Rebels did not stop after their first win; instead, they became hungry for more. After defeating Serrano, the boys’ tennis team showed no mercy and blew out Canyon High School. Like always, Isaac Kim annihilated his opponents and retained his undefeated title, and so did Westin Allen and his partner, Michael Ruddy.

The intensity that the Rebels show during their practices allow them to consistently win their games. This hard work showed during their game against Hart High School. With Kim and both Allen and Ruddy defeating their opponents once again, the Quartz Hill Rebels were determined to win. Although Hart High School managed to tie the game, Varsity doubles players Aditya Shivaram and Andrew Park led the Rebels to victory after winning the last deciding game.

Even though everything was going smoothly for the Quartz Hill Rebels, their winning streak came to an end after facing Saugus High School. The undefeated Isaac Kim lost his title against Saugus High School, as he managed to only give the Rebels 2 wins out of the 3 games he played. Justin Truong, a senior varsity player, brought home two wins as well, but lost during a tie-breaking match.

The game against Saugus was a reminder for the boys to never underestimate their opponents’ skill. Even after a tough 13-5 loss, the boys will hopefully get back on track and face the Eastside Lions during the Golden League opening.
