Met Gala Overview
May 23, 2018
This year’s Met Gala theme was certainly an odd one: “Heavenly Bodies, Fashion, and the Catholic Church.” But of course, all the stars gathered on the red carpet were sure to live up to the expectations and bring new trends to the fashion season. And sure, while us normal high schoolers can’t possibly afford these expensive dresses, we join in on the Met Gala craze by judging what everyone is wearing. With a theme like this to conform to, it’s interesting to see the stars’ new take.
1) Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra is an Indian-American actress and is most well known for her roles in Baywatch and the TV series Quantico (rip Quantico). To Indians, she’s known to be the biggest leading star in every famous Bollywood movie, ever. But aside from her prominent roles in both Hollywood and Bollywood, she’s got a great sense of style. The actress stunned the carpet with a gilded headpiece and a stunning ruby red dress, a Joan of Arc inspired look. And while it was a stretch to conform to the theme, she clearly stunned the carpet, so there were no complaints.
2) Zendaya
Zendaya, another familiar name, is known for her various roles as a Disney Channel star, but has made a name for herself in the music and film industry. As of late, her most recent role was in Spider-Man Homecoming. The actress is incredibly popular on social media for her down-to-earth posts and humor. But, for the carpet, she seems to have followed Chopra’s path by wearing a Joan of Arc inspired dress as well. But, Zendaya had none of the deep velvet and frills, her dress was metallic—almost like a real suit of armor.
3) Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian, on the other hand, wasn’t so quick to follow the theme. She wore a maxi gold sundress, complete with straps and everything. How that follows the theme of “Heavenly Bodies,” I don’t even know. But, she did rock the summer/pool aesthetic! Points for trying?
4) Rihanna
How could you ever miss this queen? She’s been having a great time, releasing clothing and makeup that fans are definitely all over. But to the Met Gala, she came dressed as an actual pope. That’s right. The singer/entrepreneur came dressed up in a gown with the famous pointed hat, bedazzled and filled with silver jewels.
5)Katy Perry
You know how all of the other outfits had a little subtlety to them? It didn’t scream out what they were portraying, but nevertheless, people still got the hint? Yeah, well, Perry’s outfit had none of that. The singer wore a gold sequined dress with matching boots. To top it all off, she wore huge angel wings sprouting from her shoulders. Talk about really going for that “heavenly body” aspect of the theme.
