Fashion is constantly evolving around us. What we see now as tacky and strange was once the go-to outfit for those living five, ten, or even twenty years ago. This generation, we witnessed the surge in a specific article of clothing, known as the Baggy Jeans. Featuring a larger-than-normal design that creates a sort of “balloon” shape towards the feet, it has become a symbol of fashion for the youth of today. However, as seen before with skinny jeans, will the popularity of their larger counterpart wither out as well? The passage of time is inevitable, and it’s destined that the baggy jeans will eventually be replaced by something different.Â
The increase in the production of clothing on a massive scale results in innovations being pushed out nearly weekly. New experimental forms of clothing are, according to Lara Galan, writer for Fashion Times, “[brought] similar products to market in a matter of weeks.” At this pace, despite the baggy pants already having a high longevity, it will most likely see its downfall as soon as the next trendy clothing article hits social media platforms.
Social media is a massive driving force behind the rapid change of fashion trends. Its global scale allows the sharing of a variety of clothing styles that have a significant influence on the changing of fashion patterns. Additionally, social media influencers and their voice allow the rapid pushing of any sponsorships that may come their way. According to Fashinnovation, “with the rise of social media and influencers, fashion has moved at a much faster pace than in the past, giving rise to terms such as fast fashion and accelerated consumption.” An increase in consumption and spread will logically increase the likelihood that a new fashion trend will replace the current one, especially with a global audience.
Generally, things change as time goes on. It is natural for new experiences to come, innovations to take over the old. According to Robert Gross et al., with the modern age, life-changing discoveries only take months or even weeks at a time. This actively reflects fashion too, as technology allows the mass production of clothing, enabling cheap experimentation that may or may not turn into something greater. Combined with the previously mentioned methods, this is logical; it is right to assume that eventually, even the infamous baggy pants will meet their end.Â
