United States history is being written with every passing day. The House of Representatives has recently begun an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump over allegations that he improperly used his office power in an attempt to win a re-election. While this may seem like justice being served to some, for many, it seems to simply be another scandal in a long line of scandal-ridden presidencies. However, this is different. This story is important and it is incumbent on all Americans to listen to what’s going on in our government. Like Thomas Paine once said in regards to starting a Revolution against the British, “The times have found us.”

The 2016 presidential election was an unprecedented rejection of what was considered the dominant political establishment. Hillary Rodham Clinton lost what many saw as an easy victory, so when President Trump, a man who had never held an elected office before, entered the White House on January 20, 2017, the country delved into uncharted territory.

In the two and a half years that have transpired since then, many reports have surfaced of the president’s misconduct and improper behavior. This corruption culminated in an investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into whether the Trump Campaign solicited foreign influence to win the election and the obstruction of justice that occurred in the aftermath. Many Democrats hoped that people would turn against the president and make impeachment reasonable. Instead, Americans became fatigued and confused over a large conspiracy that involved the Kremlin, Russian oligarchs, and campaign staffers. The public lost interest.

That was then, this is now. At this moment, Washington D.C. is reeling with new allegations that continue to come about daily that paint a picture of a corrupt and paranoid executive branch. The president pressured the leaders of Ukraine, Australia, and Italy into investigating information that would be pertinent to his 2020 presidential campaign. This story is different than anything the nation has ever seen before: the sitting president asked for a foreign power to interfere in an American election.

People are understandably tired of this madness. However, it has never been more vital than now to be engaged. It may seem cliché to say that this current story is the most important story yet, but all the facts point to this being the case. These allegations have become so serious that it has warranted a possible impeachment. Only three presidents in the past have ever faced the threat of impeachment, one of which led to resignation. The unprecedented actions taken by the president have provoked a rare decision to be reached by the House of Representatives.

The country is in the midst of a political reckoning unlike anything before. It’s crucial that we, as Americans, try to be informed about what is happening. Everyone should attempt to read the documents being released, look at newspaper articles being written, and watch the news being broadcast. The greatest right given to citizens, is the right to vote. Whether a person is eligible or not to cast their ballot in 2020, the information being revealed and the actions being taken right now will have long lasting effects on Trump’s presidency and in our country. So pay attention; don’t miss out on history in the making.
