Where do the New England Patriots lie post-Tom Brady?

By Patrick Park, Staff Writer

Tom Brady is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the NFL. With 14 Pro Bowls, 6 Super Bowls, 4 Super Bowl MVP awards, and 3 League MVP awards, Brady has a high chance of becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer. While all of this is true, credit has to be given where credit is due. Bill Belicheck is part of the reason why Tom Brady rose up to that level.

Belichick is one of the most decorated coaches of all time. He is one of only three coaches who has won six NFL titles. The New England Patriots have always been contenders for the Super Bowl title because of the dynamic duo of Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck. Now that Brady is gone, where does this leave the Patriots?

In a genius move by Belicheck, the Patriots brought in veteran quarterback Cam Newton. Cam Newton could be considered one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the NFL. When Newton was at his best, he went on a 15 – 1 record, participated in the Super Bowl, and won himself MVP. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued Newton’s career and he has not been playing at the same level ever since. Newton seems determined that a fresh start with the Patriots will get him back to his old-self.

Even with this huge addition, the Patriots still have some weak links in their offense. Although they have a Pro-bowler and Super bowl MVP receiver in Julian Edelman and a veteran running back in James White, they lack almost every other key position. They have an unproven first rounder, N’Keal Harry, who couldn’t play a single snap last season, a third-round rookie starting for the tight end position, and injury-prone Sony Michel. In spite of all this, the Patriots’ defense is stellar. They have Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore, two Pro-Bowlers safeties in the McCourty twins, and veteran line-backer Donta Hightower. In conclusion, it is too early to tell how the Patriots will do during the 2020-2021 season. However, Patriots’ fans should be very optimistic as Bill Belicheck always has a plan to win.
