Certified Lover Boy Review
On September 3, 2021, Drake released one of his most anticipated albums, Certified Lover Boy. Before the album’s initial release, Drake had teased his fans on social media about the album, and many were dying to listen to a new album. Drake’s last album, Dark Lane Demo Tapes, released in 2020, was well-favored amongst many; however, it didn’t have the same effect as his past albums, such as Scorpion or More Life. Thus, many fans were hoping this new album would be different.
This album starts with “Champagne Poetry,” which gives us insight into the album. It has a catchy and unique beat and overall compliments Drake’s rapping very well. The flow repeats itself for one-half of the song until the song shifts. The second half of the song contains a slower beat and, overall, a more serious tone. Drake executes the change in tone reasonably well, and the new vocals that play behind his rapping bring the song to another level. In the second part, Drake goes into more serious topics, such as his depression. Overall, this song is by no means a bad song to welcome the audience into the album.
One of the most notable songs in this album is the third song, “Girls want Girls,” featuring Lil Baby. Lil Baby has been one of the fastest-growing hip-hop artists in these past two years. He became a fan-favorite amongst many hip-hop fans, and many consider him one of the greatest rappers in the new generation. This song is easily one of the best songs on the album. The catchy flow and Lil Baby’s verse in this song do not disappoint.
Another notable song in this album is “Fair Trade,” featuring Travis Scott. The beat utilized in this song is possibly the best in the album. Overall, the flow in this song goes very well. The build-up to the verses is addicting and pleasing. Drake executes the chorus perfectly. However, the best part of this song is still to come. Travis Scott has the best verse, not only in this song but the entire album. The fast flow matched with the catchy beat all compliment Travis Scott’s unique rapping style and voice. The whole compilation of different elements such as lyrics, rhythm, flow, and style all form this masterpiece of a song.
While this album has its masterpieces, the album as a whole is relatively mediocre. Besides the songs mentioned in this article, all the others are rather ordinary. By no means is this album terrible; however, it doesn’t stand on par with Drake’s previous albums, such as Scorpion. This album is still a 7/10. Compared to other hip-hop albums currently released, Certified Lover Boy surpasses most.
