Boy’s Volleyball at Quartz Hill High School is one of the most competitive teams in the Antelope Valley. Currently, the team is in first place in the Golden League with a league record of 5-0 and a non-league record of 13-2. Undoubtedly, this team has many unique talents and shows excellent potential for the future. The team was offered the chance to showcase their skills in the Vegas Invitational tournament during the weekend of March 3-5. However, before the tournament, they faced an unanticipated opponent.

Before the Vegas Invitational, the boys had a hard fight against Lancaster High School in an unexpected five-set game on the night of March 2, 2023. Going into the game, everyone thought it would be an easy blowout for the Royals, as Lancaster was missing their star player. The boys were overconfident after winning the first set and ended up losing the second and fourth sets. The Royals did not have a great game that Thursday evening, and it was not a good start going into the weekend’s important tournament.

After barely grasping the win against Lancaster, the team started their road trip to Las Vegas. The Royals meant business that weekend and showed everyone what Antelope Valley volleyball is all about! Their first tournament game occurred on the afternoon of March 4, facing off against Desert Oasis High School. Unlike league, tournament matches are best out of three instead of best out of five. The team did not show mercy for the Nevada high school and breezed right past them, winning 25-17 in the first set and 25-12 in the second. Their second game had a similar outcome against Durango High School (25-18 & 25-11). The third game was a little different, however. Campo Verde High School, a powerhouse from Arizona, was their next opponent. Both teams fought hard, but the Royals tightly clutched the win in two sets, the scores being 25-22 and 25-23, putting them in a phenomenal spot going into the tournament’s second day.

On Sunday morning, the Royals realized they were facing three more powerhouse schools from Arizona. The boys seemed even more fired up on the second day and blew past the first game against Salpointe Catholic High School (25-10 & 25-20). The second game was against Catalina Foothills High School, but the Royals did not fret. The game was closer than the first, but nonetheless, they took home the win (25-19 & 25-20). Unfortunately, their impressive run ended in the third game of the second day when they faced Cienega High School. The two teams had faced off against each other in the same tournament last year, but the Royals couldn’t beat Cienega either year. This loss sent the Royals home, taking fourth place overall in the tournament.

This year’s Vegas Invitational was undoubtedly better than last year’s, but the boys are still unsatisfied. When they mean business, they MEAN BUSINESS. Make sure to support them this year, as it will be a year to remember for the volleyball team. If you have yet to watch a game, come to any of the Quartz Hill Volleyball matches, as you will not be disappointed.
