The 2024 Golden Globes was a magical night filled with astounding dialogue and hysterical jokes, “Yo, I got the gig ten days ago. Do you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these [jokes], and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.” This quote is just one beautiful example of the nonstop entertainment the audience received that night and a fantastic delivery by this year’s host, Jo Koy.
The audience’s response to the hysteria of the night was the absolute highlight of the event and kept home viewers watching. When Koy made a joke about the blockbuster film Barbie, which the entire premise of this movie was meant to detail the female experience and the hardships that women face in current society, the camera immediately panned to the cast of the film only to show the faces of the very uninterested actors. Ryan Gosling, in particular, sat and stared while Margot Robbie uttered a very uncomfortable laugh to cover the awkward silence. At home, viewers only account for hearing pity laughs or the pre-designed laugh track that is placed in the background of desperate situations. The results of this night have accomplished one thing, and that is that Jo Koy’s fanbase may have decreased by a significant amount.
Arguably, one of the most critiqued jokes of the evening was when Koy decided to take a jab at Taylor Swift. He teased, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the N.F.L.? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” Like the Barbie joke, Swift had not received this well, especially by herself. The camera wasted no time switching shots to show her annoyed face, taking a sip of her drink and her intimidating eyes on Jo Koy. Taylor’s fanbase immediately took to the internet in her defense to point out Koy’s blatantly unfunny jokes.
Besides the uncomfortable and ill-humored jokes made that night, the audience responded well to the winners of most categories. Oppenheimer and Barbie dominated most of the night as a whole, which was most anticipated by the audience. The Barbenheimer rivalry was finally put to the test. Oppenheimer had eight total nominations, while Barbie, which was the most nominated movie, had nine total nominations. Both films tied in the end with five Golden Globes each.
