Do the parents of students affect the way a teacher teaches their class? In short, yes, in some ways, more than others. Parents call and email teachers when their students complain about a teacher, rightfully so, but some fail to realize that their child could be the problem.
Quartz Hill’s instructor, Christopher Hall, coordinator and founder of the Television and Video Academy, and the choir teacher, Daniel Martensen, were asked, “Do the parents of your students complain to you or the administration, and how does this affect your day or mood in any way?” “Mr. Hall responded, “Not often, but yes, I have gotten parents to complain to me about their students, but it has never been something that couldn’t be fixed.” He continued, “Yes, of course, people fail to realize that teachers are human too, as a teacher, you put so much of yourself into your profession, and when someone comes and criticizes you for it, you can’t help but feel a little bit hurt.” Mr. Martens said, “yes they do, but I would prefer they come and talk to me because often the issue could be resolved easily.” Question two he continued with, “Absolutely, yes, I feel more annoyed than anything because I think every single time they’ve come to me to complain about me has just been a misunderstanding.”The culinary chemistry teacher at Quartz Hill, Greg Cate responded that he simply did not care whether students or parents complained since he’d been teaching for so long, but he did change how he talked to that student in particular.
In the end, there aren’t many teachers willing to put their heart and soul into teaching, so when a teacher does, and students and parents complain, it can their day-to-day excitement for teaching. The teachers who love their jobs and genuinely want the best for their students should be praised and encouraged since finding such teachers is hard to do. So, do the parents of students affect how a teacher teaches? Yes. Teachers experience emotions like everyone else, and it is crucial for people to recognize this. By fostering understanding and support, we can create an environment where teachers feel comfortable and fulfilled, ultimately enhancing the quality of their teaching.
