Are you a senior?
Do you feel burned out from school?
It makes sense.
College application season is over.
Most of us already have enough credits to graduate.
And the classes we’re taking feel like time-fillers.
So now what?
What do we do now, as graduation gets closer and senioritis is hitting harder and harder? It almost seems pointless to do all these mundane homework tasks that are unnecessary for finishing high school. So, how can we push through and make it to the end of the school year whilst lacking motivation? This second semester is 98 weekdays long, meaning there will be less than 90 school days left when you read this. Whether you’ve gone to Quartz Hill High for all four years of high school or moved sometime in between, graduating high school will undoubtedly face our seniors with significant change and prove to be a time for deep self-reflection. In these next 100 days, think and self-reflect whether you know exactly what you want to do in your life or have absolutely no clue. Think about yourself and the choices you want to make. We’ve been taught our whole life to consider others’ feelings and perspectives, and while that is true, as you shouldn’t disrespect anyone just because you’re about to graduate, this is a time to be selfish. You deserve to be able to make your own choices and not let yourself be held back by those around you. If you want to do something that’ll make you happy, and you can figure out a way to do it, then do it. Whether that be attending a college in a different state, getting a new job, or cutting off those friends with whom you feel no connection anymore. There is no audience for you to perform for; there is just you. So, allow yourself to make decisions based on your judgment, making you feel the happiest. With less than 20 weeks till graduation, make the most of the time you have left. Hang out with your friends and family, and go to as many school events as you can; even if you don’t feel like it at the moment, there is a guarantee that you’ll at least have a little bit of fun. Keep up and maintain decent grades. ‘Senioritis’ hits hard for many of us in the second semester of grade 12. Doing simple homework assignments can feel like being assigned a 5000-word essay, but you still need to try your hardest to stay on top of studying and homework.
Because for those going to college, this is only the beginning of homework, so you may as well practice good work habits! And for those not going to college, you may never have to do homework again, so why not finish your last year of schooling doing the best you can do? And lastly, the most crucial piece of advice for high school seniors that I could give is a piece of advice that we’ve all heard a thousand times. However, we often don’t listen to it. That is, to take risks and be brave! These are your last weeks in high school; soon, you will never see many of these people again, so be courageous! Think of yourself as a freshman when you first started high school and what you were scared of. And do something that your freshman self never would’ve dreamed of doing! Speak up in class, talk to someone new, thank your teachers, and be confident. Remember, you don’t need to be perfect; you just need to be brave. Once you graduate, most people in your grade will not remember you, so there is no point in fearing judgment from those who do not influence your life. So why not do everything you’ve always wanted to do in high school? Make your younger self proud of who you are today and who you are growing up to be.
