While the Oscars isn’t a new event in the slightest, with its start in 1929, the latest winners and losers always make it worth the watch each year. If you don’t know or understand what the Oscars is about, it’s an award show to celebrate those in the film industry for their hard work. Each year, it is hosted by a celebrity or comedian. The 2025 Oscars host was Conan O’Brien, who said he would also be returning to host next year’s Oscars, and with his fantastic performance this year, it will be a thrill to see what he comes up with next year. The Oscars are a big deal. Winning an Oscar adds to your reputation, whether for a fantastic director or a phenomenal actor. Oscars help recognize people for their work and impressive performances. This year, we had an interesting lineup of movies, animations, actors, and actresses nominated for Oscars. Due to the number of Oscars this year, I will only be sharing the most impressive and interesting ones, and I might skip a few more minor Oscar winners out of the 23.
This year, we saw a lot of repeat films and productions being represented and nominated for several different awards. The movie Anora, written, directed, and edited by Sean Baker, caught the attention of many since it was nominated for six other Oscars and won three. Baker won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Editing for his movie. Anora impressed many with its stunning visuals and Baker’s exceptional abilities. Wicked had even more nominations, nominated for 10 different awards, but only won two for Best Costume Design by Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales’s work. The Brutalist also had 10 nominations and won in three categories: Best Cinematography for Fantastic Art, storytelling, Aesthetic, Best Score, and Best Lead Actor, which was given to actor Adrien Brody.
A film that surprised many with its amount of nominations was Emilia Pérez. This film was nominated in 13 different categories, even with its controversy. Many were underwhelmed and angry at this film’s portrayal of the LGBTQ community, the portrayal of Mexico, and the accents and actors from the film. Despite this controversy, the film still won two different Oscars for Best Supporting Actress, won by Zoe Saldaña, and Best Original Song for the piece “El Mal.”
Besides the movies with numerous nominations, several films only had one or two nominations but still won Oscars. The animated movie Flow was nominated for only two Oscars but won Best Animated Feature Film. It was well deserved for its striking visuals and interesting story that took 5 years to make. Other Films like A Real Pain won for Best Supporting Actor going to Kiran Culkin, and Conclave won for Best Adapted Screenplay. Several other actors, writers, and directors won awards at the Oscars, and there were also several losers, but even without winning, being nominated for an Oscar proves how exceptional the performance, design, and production were.
The Oscars this year had a fantastic lineup, with some nominations and winners more worthy than others. Like last year’s Oscar show, several impressive films were represented; in the previous year, we saw recognition for the two notable films Barbie and Oppenheimer, and this year, we saw Wicked and Anora taking the show along with unforgettable films like The Brutalist. The Oscars have been filled with creative films these last two years that have somehow changed the film industry. Altogether, Conan O’Brien did a fantastic job hosting, and I can’t wait to see him host the Oscars next year.
