Movie or book series that survive the test of time kindle the fans’ interest and make them desire to know more. They create deep burning desires so that fans of these franchises can recall when they first encountered these stories. The Star Wars series is the epitome of this.

Since the first Star Wars movie was released in 1977, there have been many other movies emulating the same story in a galaxy far, far away. Its success makes people wonder what George Lucas did right to create the beginnings of such a successful film series. What he did that so many story writers aspire to do is create the right amount of reality, fantasy, symbolism, and emotion.

However, it is not only Lucas’s brilliance that kept the saga great but also the work of others. The movies’ soundtracks add flavor and emotion to scenes. In fact, it is hard to find anyone that does not recognize the famous theme song. This saga is a story that mixes the right amount of fantasy and reality to make the  setting feel human, rather than cold or sterile.

The Star Wars saga is not the only example of this; the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit series also provide examples of good storylines that transcend through time and generations. The Lord of the Rings is a work of brilliance that has a plotline complex but still maintains a moving story with lovable characters. The Hobbit not only describes Middle Earth, the world in which it and its predecessor take place, but it also gives fans a different perspective on the main character of the latter.

Just as there are ways that make stories stand the test of time, there are sequels that fail to live up to their original counterpart. Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 were both movies adored by the American public back in 1980’s. However, in the summer of 2016, a gender-swapped, modernized remake was released. The new Ghostbusters was only original in its updated ideas on gender equality.

Stories that are to be remembered need the right amount of originality, fantasy, simplicity, and true emotions. These types of stories can work, but they need to be done properly. Without elements such as these, the story would be terrible.
