Does Trump’s Executive Order Deserve the Backlash?
Despite only a few weeks passing since his presidential inauguration, Trump has already been making a vigorous effort to stand by his promise to “make America great again.”
Possibly the most notable and controversial decision Trump has made thus far is the executive order to restrict refugee immigration and temporarily ban citizens from seven specified Muslim-majority countries (Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen) from entering the United States. Trump claims that it is not a Muslim ban, and it was mentioned by Sean Spicer, the White House spokesperson, that these countries were first chosen by the Obama administration as “countries of concern.”
This halt on transportation was called to last for 120 days and would also subject green-card holders planning to travel to and from these countries to further screenings and questioning.
The use of an executive order to halt transportation from certain countries was unheard of, making this decision foreign, unsettling, and controversial to most people. Some argue that this decision was for the safety and protection of our country. However, do the consequences of the executive order outweigh the intent of national security?
Many Americans are furious, and thousands have already gathered in front of airports to protest the halt of the immigrants and refugees. According to The Guardian, the amount of accepted refugees will decrease from 110,000 to 50,000 in 2017, and Christian refugees would be prioritized, as stated in an interview with Trump.
It is hard for the banned and restricted countries not to take offense from this. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran declared the travel restrictions as “a clear insult to the Islamic world.” They go on by proclaiming that the U.S Government’s reckless decision would only spark more acts of hatred and extremism.
The detaining process is a mess, and many are confused on who is affected. Some students who were studying abroad were halted or delayed from plane travel. Numerous people who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and were promised help with resettlement were also detained. This chaos led to the criticism from students, vacationers, fighters, and many others. The executive order was rushed and unclear, upsetting many and entangling innocent people in chaos.
Although it is commendable that President Trump follows through on his promises, the consequences of the executive order were not worth the trouble. It simply led to widespread criticism and was not executed properly as to avoid mix-ups and disorder. Yes, Trump’s order was underthought and rushed, and it deserves the backlash and disapproval that it received.
