Will the Golden State Warriors Return to Their Former Greatness?

By Patrick Park, Staff Writer

In recent years, the Golden State Warriors have been considered one of the most successful dynasties in the NBA: winning three championships in the span of five years. However, last year they were horrific: winning only 15 games and losing 50. As a matter of fact, the Warriors failed to reach 50 wins in a season for the first time since 2013. However, it was not really the coaching that was causing them to play so poorly, it was just unlucky injuries.

To start off, Steph Curry broke his hand playing against the Phoenix Suns last season. After confirming this on an x-ray scan, doctors claimed he would need to wait three months before playing again. Alongside Klay Thompson’s injury of a torn ACL, the Warriors only had three-time all-star Draymond Green and 2019 all-star D’Angelo Russell. However, as the results have shown, these two were not enough to carry the team. Now that the 2020 season is over, the Golden State Warriors are hungry to recapture their former glory. But will they? Recent reports have stated that Klay Thompson tore his achilles during a workout which ruled him out for the 2020-2021 season. This is a significant loss as Thompson is one of the main players that helped Golden State reach the finals. Klay Thompson is a three-time NBA champion, a five-time NBA all-star, and a two-time NBA third-team honoree. Alongside Steph Curry, Thompson has made the Warriors one of the best teams in the league.

Going on to the good news, the Warriors had the second pick in this year’s draft in which they selected James Wiseman out of the University of Memphis. Although we are yet to see Wiseman’s skill in the league, he is listed as a seven-foot center and one of the best players according to the Warriors. In fact, he was picked over Lamelo Ball, brother of Lonzo Ball who is making a name for himself with the New Orleans Pelicans. In addition to this, Curry is expected to return for the 2020-21 season which gives the Warriors an extreme boost. Now taking a look at the Warriors’ roster, it is adequate to say the least. Granted it is nowhere near the star-studded roster it once was with Kevin Durant, Zach Pauchlia, and Andre Iguodala who won the Warriors the 2018 championship. However, with Steph Curry and Draymond Green being reunited once more, it will be interesting to see how they play with the young talent they have. It is important to note that NBA’s free agency has just started and there is a chance the Warriors will pick up some big-name players seeing how Klay Thompson is no longer available. In conclusion, Warriors fans should regain some hope for this season, but not too much due to the significant loss of Klay Thompson. With the return of Curry, the Warriors should do much better than last season.
