In 2021, Warner Bros released a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film adaptation, separate from the original 1995 version, that garnered mixed reviews. On IMDb, audiences rated the movie a 6.1 out of 10, with the average rating for action movies being around 7. Many criticized its introduction of Cole Young, an MMA fighter who is the main character in the reboot, but not in any of the games. I felt that this opportunity was wasted as Warner Bros. could have chosen a different character from the games to make the story stick to the original lore.
However, the movie did have many highlights, with excellent battle scenes, especially the first one between Hanzo Hasashi(better known as Scorpion) and his nemesis, Sub-Zero, as well as great special effects designed for each character’s unique powers. The costumes and outfits were also impressive, reminiscent of the games but adding their own cinematic flair to them. That being said, arguably the most important part of the series was left out, the Mortal Kombat Tournament, in which members of the Outworld and Earthrealm compete to gain the right to invade the other realm.
Originally set for October 24th, Warner Bros. decided to push back the release date to May 15th, 2026, making it a summer release instead of a fall one. Now, with 7 months between the present and the official release date, fans are left with even more questions and anticipation than before. What can we expect from the movie?
With the first trailer already released, we can see the addition of characters in the sequel who weren’t in the first movie, including Noob Saibot, Shao Khan, Jade, and Johnny Cage, who is the main character. The sequel revolves around Johnny Cage, a washed-up actor, and, as implied by dialogue from the trailer, he does not have any powers. This introduces a shift towards having characters from the Mortal Kombat video game series as the main focus, with Cole Young being featured without dialogue in the trailer, which hopefully means he will have a smaller role in the film.
In the trailer, he is shown fighting Baraka, a mutant who has caught the Tarkat disease, which deforms its victims into hideous, sharp-toothed mutants, and Mileena, one of the ninjas. The trailer suggests intense action scenes, cool displays of powers like lightning, cryomancy (the ability to control ice), and lasers, as well as excellent costume designs, with the implication of an actual tournament between the characters of Earthrealm and Outworld. The warriors of the Earthrealm, or Earth, will have to do their best to save our realm from the one who wants to conquer it, Shao Khan. Assuming there are no more delays, on May 15th, 2026, we will be able to see for ourselves the much-anticipated sequel to the Mortal Kombat reboot.
