Are you tired of going to Big Belly and the AM/PM gas station for something other than school lunch? This is one everyday issue that continues to frustrate students, a small variety of food places close to school. To put it quite plainly, Quartz Hill High School is in the middle of nowhere, right across from a farm of all places. For many seniors who leave campus during lunch, the problem isn’t just variety. It’s about time, transportation, and good food.Â
Right now, the hottest food spots are at least a 10-minute drive from school. By the time students get there and drive back with their food, lunch is already over. Not only do the students feel rushed and stressed, but it also eliminates our lunch break. Instead of using the biggest break to relax, they spend it worried about traffic and making it back before the bell rings. With all those inconveniences, this defeats the privilege of off-campus lunch.Â
While some could argue that the solution is just not going out to get food at all. Although that could save money, there’s no fun in eating school lunch every day. Both you and I know that the quality of cafeteria food isn’t the best. Having a variety could help students look forward to lunch and give them the independence they’ve been wanting. With more nearby food spots, we could have healthier options which would improve moods and boost energy levels.
There’s been talk of a brand-new Starbucks being built across the school, where the farm stands now. Instead of having giant corporations close by, I would encourage small businesses to be within walking distance of campus. That way, there would be a wider variety of food, and small businesses would generate more revenue from more desperate, hungry customers. Local businesses thrive on loyal customers, which is exactly what students would be. A local sandwich or smoothie shop would make thousands of dollars per day thanks to seniors who are eager to gain independence. That kind of mutually beneficial relationship would strengthen community and school spirit.Â
This type of partnership would change the Quartz Hill community, going from dull interactions and stressed-out students to healthy relationships and energized students. The only huge thing that would improve students’ high school experience is the food nearby. It may sound ridiculous, but take it from a current student enrolled here at Quartz Hill High School.
