Oprah Interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
April 30, 2021
Famous American talk show host Oprah Winfrey held an interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry that first aired through CBS on Sunday, March 7, 2021. The two-hour interview had been titled A CBS Primetime Special and had brought in a massive virtual audience of 17.8 million viewers.
Meghan Markle is the Duchess of Sussex but is more commonly known as a former American actress who married into the British royal family through Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. To briefly summarize their relationship, the two had first met on a blind date back in July 2016, and about a year later, in November 2017, the couple announced their engagement. On May 19, 2018, millions of people worldwide had physically attended or tuned in to watch Meghan Markle marry Prince Harry at Windsor Castle. In January 2020, the two chose to permanently step back from their working roles as members of the royal family.
The first hour of the primetime interview consisted of a conversation between Oprah and Meghan, in which the latter shared some personal information and experiences that appeared to shock both the interviewer and the audience.
It was previously publicly announced by the UK press that Meghan had had a disagreement with Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, on Meghan’s wedding day regarding the bridesmaids’ dresses. It was released that the dispute led to Meghan causing Kate to cry, but Meghan revealed in her recent interview that it was actually the opposite. The interviewee also explained that the Palace had no intentions of sharing the truth to the public to clear Meghan’s name, but claimed that she held no hard feelings towards Kate.
Another major revelation revealed in the interview was that at some point during her time as a working royal family member, Meghan had begun to have suicidal thoughts. After months of struggling with negative UK press content, she sought help for her deteriorating mental health from the Royal Institution. They denied providing her any support or resources, claiming that it would harm the Palace’s image and reputation. The couple explained that this issue had played a vital role in their decision to resign from their royal roles.
In the second hour of the interview, Oprah and Meghan had been joined by Prince Harry. During her solo discussion, Meghan had mentioned that Harry told her that there had been racist conversations amongst the royals at Buckingham Palace concerning the skin color of Meghan and Harry’s son Archie. Harry confirmed that there were talks before Archie was born regarding how dark his skin would be that made him extremely uncomfortable, but he declined to reveal which people were involved in the conversations.
Although the highly anticipated “bombshell” interview did reveal a lot of surprising information involving the royal family, the couple managed to end it on a more lighthearted note, in which Meghan and Harry joyously announced that they are expecting a baby girl sometime during the summer of this year.
